Lip augmentation, or lip enhancement, is a procedure designed to restore fullness
to the aging lips or provide augmentation to genetically thin-lipped individuals. Since the lips are
such a central feature of the face, involved in kissing, smiling, chewing, and talking, they must be
approached with the utmost care and finesse.
Our Double Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeons, Drs. Maloney and Agarwal, utilize several options,
non-surgical and surgical, to augment the lips. Non-surgical options include injectable fillers such as
Juvederm® Injectable Gel or Restylane®. These temporary treatments provide a glimpse of what permanent
augmentation may provide and are often a good starting point. Permanent surgical options include
Sternocleidomastoid Muscle and Fascia Grafts to the lips or the Perma Facial Implant.

This technique was developed by Dr. Richard Maloney in 1996. The procedure is routinely performed by
both Drs. Maloney and Agarwal. The muscle grafts are taken from the back of the neck, commonly during
simultaneous facelift surgery, and are contoured to fit the patient's desired configuration and intrinsic
lip shape. They are then transplanted into the lips through a small incision inside the corner of each
side of the mouth. These grafts are taken from one's own body, thus there is no issue of any rejection
or an artificial feel. The aesthetic cupid's bow is maintained and unlike other artificial materials,
enhancement can be achieved along the center and the sides of the lips. This offers a natural, long
lasting solution to thin or atrophic lips.

Perma Facial Implants are soft, solid silicone implants that were FDA cleared in 2007. They are inserted
in the lips in the office under local anesthesia, requiring no secondary harvest site. The procedure takes
about 30 minutes, and there is some degree of swelling lasting up to two weeks. Because the implants have
a smooth surface, there is no tissue ingrowth, and therefore, no limitation of one's natural smile or
lip movement. This procedure is ideal for someone seeking a permanent lip augmentation option in the
office or someone who does not want to have muscle harvested from the neck.
