If there’s one surgery people most commonly think of when they hear the phrase "facial plastic surgery," it’s rhinoplasty. Whether it’s performed for purely cosmetic reasons or to correct a cosmetic and a functional issue, rhinoplasty remains one of the most frequently performed surgeries.
Several factors can help you decide if you’re a good candidate for surgery. Even if the procedure seems like a remote possibility at the moment, it can be helpful to sit down with a facial plastic surgeon and discuss it. A board certified facial plastic surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty can give you an idea of what to expect from the surgery, as well as a few things to think about if you’re seriously considering it.
You Have a Problem With Your Nose
Obviously, if you are perfectly happy with the way your nose looks and functions, you are unlikely to consider rhinoplasty. If you have any sort of issue with your nose, then surgery might be a good option for you. For example, rhinoplasty can be a good pick for people who want to make their nose slightly smaller or slightly larger. Changing the size of your nose can help bring balance to your entire face. Increasing the size of a smaller nose, for example, can make features that seemed too large previously look more proportionate.
Other nose issues that might make you a good candidate for surgery include a tip that is either too upturned or too droopy. Usually, a nasal tip with a projection around 90 degrees or so is considered ideal. Alternatively, you might have a bump on your nose that you feel self-conscious about or a dent or depression in the nose that you aren’t happy about.
It’s not only looks that can make you a good candidate for rhinoplasty. Your surgeon might recommend a combined rhinoplasty and septoplasty and/or turbinate reduction to treat nasal obstruction from a deviated septum and/or turbinate enlargement.
You’re Otherwise in Good Health
While your nasal problems might present a few health challenges to you, usually your surgeon will recommend that the rest of your health be tip-top before he’ll recommend nasal surgery. Typically, it’s recommended that you have a full medical exam before you have your procedure. During the exam, your doctor will check out your blood pressure, test your liver function, and take a few blood samples.
Along with making sure you’re in good shape for rhinoplasty, a full medical exam can help you spot any potential problems or lurking medical issues before they become a big deal. For example, your medical exam might reveal that your blood sugar levels are on the high side, but that you don’t yet have diabetes. Knowing your blood sugar levels lets you take action to prevent diabetes from happening and to improve your overall health.
You Have an Understanding of What the Surgery Can Do
Understanding the limits of surgery is also important. Your surgeon will most likely remind you that rhinoplasty won’t change who you are as a person, nor will it necessarily make a lot of great things happen to you. You might find that, after surgery, you feel more confident and happy and that good things start happening to you. But, it’s important to know that the good things are happening because of your increased confidence and your willingness to try new things or accept new challenges, not because a surgeon changed the way your nose looks.
You Have the Time
Time is also important when you’re considering rhinoplasty. The surgery itself might only take a few hours, but the initial recovery period can be up to two weeks. You might need a few weeks after that before you feel completely comfortable resuming all of your old activities.
If life’s a bit busy right now and you can’t stop and take a week or two off from work or can’t avoid vigorous activity for a month or so, it might be best to postpone the surgery until your schedule frees up. Waiting for the right time to have surgery can make a big difference when it comes to how happy you feel about your nose and your experience in the long run.
