Not all anti-aging treatments available today are surgical, making it easier to achieve that youthful look once more. Men and women alike can benefit from nonsurgical injectable treatments like Botox Cosmetic or Juvederm Injectable Gel. These treatments can help you reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but in two very different ways. Understanding the differences between Botox and Juvederm or other dermal filler treatments can help you to decide which nonsurgical approach is the right one for you.
All About Injectable Neurotoxins
Injectable treatments such as Botox are FDA-approved, purified neurotoxins that are created to alleviate fine lines and wrinkles. They work by gently blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the treated areas, which relaxes the muscles of your face for an extended period of time but not permanently. When the muscles are relaxed, usually for a few months following treatment, the skin is able to lie flat and undisturbed. Fine lines, wrinkles, and even deep creases caused by contracting muscles will be smoothed away. Not only will Botox help your skin appear to be less wrinkled, but it will also prevent new wrinkles from forming as long as the muscles are relaxed.
Botox injections are best used against the horizontal lines across the forehead and the worry lines between the brows. Squinting lines and crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes also tend to respond well to injectable treatments, as do the fine lines around the mouth. Botox, specifically, has been approved by the FDA to treat the glabellar lines between the brows, crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and creases along the neck line.
The Botox treatment itself lasts about 10 minutes and can be performed in your plastic surgeon’s office. There is no need for an anesthetic but a topical numbing cream or ice may be used to make you more comfortable during the procedure. Most patients describe the sensation as a pinching or a “bug bite.” The number of injections needed to achieve your desired results will be determined by your plastic surgeon based on the severity of your wrinkles. On average, your results should last around three to four months, so you can plan your treatment schedule ahead of time.
All About Injectable Facial Fillers
Facial fillers like Juvederm, which was FDA approved in 2006, can also be used to effectively and safely treat lines and wrinkles to create a more youthful appearance. It is a gel-like formula comprised of hyaluronic acid which is a natural protein found in human skin. Juvederm is ideal for treatment wrinkles, deep folds, fine lines around the lips and tear troughs, and more. Because of the way this filler works, it is a popular choice for injectable lip enhancement. Other available injectable fillers include Perlane, Voluma, Artefill, Restylane, and Radiesse, each of which can be used to achieve specific results in finely targeted areas of the face, neck, and hands as needed.
Fillers like Juvederm work in a very different way than neurotoxin treatments. With these injections, the muscles are unaffected and will continue to move and respond as usual. Instead, a gel-like or granular filler substance will be carefully injected under the skin to provide a smoother, fuller look. They are literally “fillers” that can enhance the lips, cheeks, or anywhere that volume has been lost. As a result, lines and wrinkles caused by loose skin and lost tissue can be smoothed away as a side effect of this more youthful appearance.
An injectable filler treatment is very similar to that of a Botox treatment. It takes only a few minutes to perform, does not involve anesthesia, and will not require recovery time afterwards. Likewise, your results will last only a few months, typically around four to six before your results begin to diminish in appearance. Touch up treatments can be planned in advance to avoid any lapse in your results.
Talk to your plastic surgeon about the right strategy for your own nonsurgical anti-aging care. He or she can recommend one treatment or another, as well as a combination of different types of fillers to achieve the results you desire.
