As you get older, the skin begins to lose elasticity. Areas that were once well-defined and sleek start to become saggy and loose. The neck and jawline are two areas that often begin to show the first signs of age. Many patients long for a more youthful neck but aren’t sure what they can do to improve the appearance of their neck and jawline.
There are creams you can use to moisturize and laser treatments to improve the texture of the skin. But these options won’t take care of the problem of sagging. For many patients, even those with early signs of aging, surgery is the best option for correcting skin laxity.
Not all surgeries are created equal, though. Some so-called “mini facelifts” focus exclusively on tightening the outer layer of skin. They don’t do anything to correct the underlying problem. More in-depth surgeries such as a facelift might be too much for what a younger patient needs or might offer too much correction.
Enter the UpLift Facelift. It was developed by Dr. Agarwal and Dr. Maloney to tighten the lower jawline and neck. For the right patient, it can be the ideal option for restoring a youthful neck and jawline.
The UpLift Facelift Restores a Youthful Neck
More in-depth than a typical mini facelift, the UpLift Facelift restructures the neck area to turn back the clock. At the start of the procedure, the surgeon makes incisions in the ear, around the earlobe and beneath the chin. The positioning of the incisions means that they are well concealed.
The steps that are included in the UpLift Facelift depend in part on a patient’s specific needs. The surgeon will reattach the neck muscle as needed and tighten the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) using an SMAS flap. If there is a considerable amount of extra fat in the neck area, the surgeon may also perform liposuction during the UpLift procedure.
Are You a Candidate?
Generally speaking, any person with looseness or sagging in the neck and jaw area could be a candidate for the UpLift Facelift. The procedure is typically recommended to any individuals over the age of 35, and it can be appropriate for those who are much older, depending on the degree of aging and laxity in the neck area.
There are a few considerations that can affect your candidacy for the surgery. For example, if you’re an active smoker, your surgeon will recommend quitting for a few weeks before and after the surgery.
If you’re interested in the procedure, it’s a good idea to discuss the specifics and whether or not you’d be a good candidate for it with a surgeon beforehand. The consultation will usually include a medical exam and simulation in front of a 3 way mirror, to give you an idea of the type of results you can expect from the procedure.
What to Expect from the Surgery
The UpLift Facelift is a surgical procedure, although it is less invasive than a full facelift and often has a shorter recovery period. You will have to postpone several types of activities right after the procedure, though. Generally speaking, you can expect to return to work after about a week and a half. Some people might need two weeks off, though.
Some types of physical activity are OK within a week of the surgery. You can start walking briskly 2-3 days afterward, but you will want to put off more strenuous workouts for at least two weeks. If you’re an avid golfer, you can get back on the green after 10 days, but it will be a full three weeks before you’ll be able to fully swing your clubs.
Results from the procedure are long lasting and are an effective way to “turn back the clock” on the aging process. Having the UpLift Facelift when you are 63 can make you look 10 years younger. You’ll keep aging, but will continue to look more youthful. That can mean that when you are 70 you look 60, and when you are 75 you look 65.
