Plump, full, contoured lips are considered feminine and beautiful. They can dramatically improve the appearance and balance facial features. As we age, our lips become thinner and longer. Thin lips take away from an otherwise lovely appearance, and coupled with vertical lip lines, can make someone look years older than they really are.
What areas can Volbella® treat?
Juvederm Volbella® was created specifically to treat the lips and the peri-oral area. The smooth gel is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a safe treatment, with few side effects and long lasting results.
Volbella® will:
- Smooth fine lip lines, also known as ‘smoker’s lines’
- Restore lip borders
- Plump the lips, especially in conjunction with Juvederm® Injectable Gel
Volbella® can restore a younger appearance, making the lips fuller and more proportionate with the facial features. The shapely, plump lips and more defined lip borders give the face a softer, more feminine look. For more complete facial rejuvenation, Volbella® can be combined with other injectables, such as Botox® Cosmetic or Juvederm®, to improve the look of fine lines, deeper wrinkles, or volume loss along the cheek or jawline. During the consultation appointment, Dr. Agarwal, Dr. Maloney, or Dr. Holmes will explain all of the options available for facial rejuvenation.
Juvederm Volbella® is also used through an off-label indication to treat hollowing of the under eye tear troughs. This is Dr. Agarwal’s filler of choice for this area of the face, next to fat transfer. Injections in this area must be performed with meticulous precision because of how thin the skin is in this area of the face. There is a higher risk of bruising in this area, but Juvederm Volbella® injections can significantly refresh the under eye area when injected properly by a skilled plastic surgeon.

Volbella® Injections
At the Aesthetic Surgery Center, all Volbella® injections are administered by one of our seasoned plastic surgeons. We do not delegate this responsibility to physician assistants or nurse injectors. Injection sessions are held in a comfortable treatment room, giving each patient complete privacy. As Volbella® is premixed with lidocaine, a topical anesthetic, there is minimal pain with the injections. For those patients needing added comfort, additional anesthetics are available. A Volbella® session at the Aesthetic Surgery Center normally takes 30 minutes or less, getting patients quickly back to their normal routine.
Minimal downtime is necessary after Volbella® injections, making the injectable perfect for a lunchtime procedure. The results can be seen right away. Better yet, the collagen-boosting HA helps the results from a single treatment can last up to a full year. When the benefits of Volbella® begin to fade, a repeat session can safely maintain results.
How Juvederm Volbella® Works
Volbella® is a unique dermal filler from Juvederm, created especially for use in the delicate lip and mouth area. Our surgeons also use this produce off-label to treat under eye hollows. Made with cutting-edge Vycross™ technology, the smooth, creamy gel formula ensures easy injections and consistent results. Volbella® uses a low concentration of hyaluronic acid (HA), reducing the chance for the unexpected, post-op swelling that can be seen with traditional fillers. By boosting the body’s collagen production, the low-level HA replenishes the tissue’s natural structure to provide exceptional, long-lasting results.
Side Effects and Risks of Volbella®
Approved by the FDA as a safe and effective treatment for plumping the lips and smoothing lip lines, Volbella® is a trusted dermal filler. Side effects from the injections are mild, but commonly include swelling, tenderness, firmness, bruising, redness, and itching. Since Volbella® has a lower concentration of HA than traditional dermal fillers, less water is drawn into the lips, meaning less swelling. More severe complications are rare, especially when Volbella® is provided by an experienced practitioner, but there is remains a small risk for infection, scarring, facial asymmetry, and nerve damage to occur.
