If there’s one plastic surgery procedure that’s seen the greatest increase in interest and attention in recent years, it would be the Brazilian butt lift. The Brazilian butt lift, sometimes just called BBL, was created by a plastic surgeon in Brazil. People have become more interested in the surgery recently due to an increased interest in round, full backsides.
Of course, there are other reasons to consider a butt lift. You might be interested in the surgery if you’ve lost some volume from the buttocks thanks to weight loss or pregnancy. The aging process can also leave you with a flatter derriere. Some women have smaller butts naturally, thanks to their genes. Whatever your reason for being interested in a BBL, here’s what you need to know about it.
It’s a Three-Step Process
Generally speaking, a Brazilian butt lift can take anywhere from two to three hours. That’s because multiple steps–three in all–are part of the procedure.
The first step inovles taking some fat from one area of your body using liposuction to harvest the fat. Fat removal is one benefit of the BBL. You can sculpt and slim down a problem area, like the love handles or thighs, while augmenting the buttocks.
Once your surgeon has harvested the fat, it’s time to purify it. The fat is processed can be processed using several different techniques, which ultimately separates the usable cells from the non-usable ones. The usable cells are then put into a syringe.
The last step of the process involves carefully injecting the fat into the buttocks to create the desired shape and to increase the volume of the backside to the desired amount.
You Need Some Fat
Since a BBL uses your own fat to enhance the buttocks, having enough fat to remove, purify, and then inject into the butt is key. It’s possible to be too thin for a BBL. If that is the case for you, your surgeon might recommend putting on a bit of weight, so that you gain fat that can be liposuctioned out. You’ll need to be careful not to gain too much weight. Usually, putting on 10 to 20 pounds is recommended.
Brazilian Butt Lift Has Advantages Over Implants
Butt implants are another option for people who want to augment their backsides. But, for the most part, BBL is the preferred option for buttocks augmentation. There are a few reasons for that.
One of the big reasons is that BBL creates a more natural appearance and also feels more natural than implants. During a BBL, a surgeon can choose where to inject the fat to create the ideal shape. She can also decide how much fat to inject to help the patient get the size she wants. The options are considerably more limited with implants.
Plus, implants have a greater risk for complications compared to BBL. The incision made for implants is usually larger than for BBL, so there is an increased risk for poor wound healing or visible scarring.
Implants also have a tendency to become uncomfortable over time and might be visible beneath the skin. Usually, the only time a surgeon will recommend implants over a BBL is when a patient is very thin and has trouble putting on extra fat.
You’ll Want to Avoid Sitting for a While
When you sit, you put pressure on your butt. That pressure can cause the body to reabsorb some of the fat your surgeon painstakingly harvested and then injected. For that reason, it’s usually a good idea to stay out of a chair for at least a few weeks after your Brazilian butt lift.
Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to take it easy during your initial recovery. You can lie on your side or stomach when relaxing, for example. It’s also a good idea to sleep on your stomach or side during your recovery.
For those times when you can’t avoid sitting, such when you’re in a car, your surgeon might recommend bringing along a special pillow to sit on. The pillow should provide support and help you avoid putting any extra weight on the buttocks.
Results Are Long Lasting
The results from a Brazilian butt lift are usually very long lasting and can even be permanent. Usually, slightly more than half of the fat injected during the surgery stays in place for the long term. Your surgeon might slightly overfill the buttocks during the procedure to make up for any fat that gets absorbed.
Although your results will last for years, it’s important to understand that you’ll continue to age and might see some changes in the shape of your butt over time. The skin might lose elasticity, for example. It’s also possible for you to lose or gain some volume in the backside if you lose or gain weight over the years.
