When you decided to have children, you likely expected that pregnancy would change your body. But just how much your body actually changed with pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding may have come as a surprise, if not a shock. If you had a flat stomach before, you might have a bit of a tummy now. Or, your previously perky breasts might be deflated and saggy. Women who gave birth via C-section are usually left with a large scar across their abdomens.
A mommy makeover can help restore you body to the way it was before you had kids. If diet and exercise haven’t helped you lose that last bit of fat or if you’re dealing with stretched out skin and scarring, a combination of surgeries might be the right option for you. Like all plastic surgery procedures, mommy makeovers aren’t right for everyone. Here are a few signs that you are ready to move forward.
Your Family is Complete
Technically you can still get pregnant again and breastfeed after having a mommy makeover. But it’s usually recommended that you postpone the surgeries until you are fairly certain that you’re finished having children and finished breastfeeding.
The reason for that is simple. Getting pregnant again might reverse some of the results from your surgery, while breastfeeding an infant after having a breast lift or breast augmentation might change the shape or size of your breasts. Although many women are able to breastfeed after breast surgery, it’s important to note that there are some cases where surgery interferes with the ability to breastfeed.
You Have Support at Home
As with any type of plastic surgery, you’re going to want to take it easy for about one or two weeks after your mommy makeover. You’ll need time to rest up and recover after the procedure. You’re also likely to find, especially if you have a tummy tuck, that some activities are particularly challenging, if not impossible. This can include picking up a baby or child and carrying him or her around.
Whether your support is in the form of a caring spouse who can keep an eye on the kids and see to their needs, or one of your parents who comes to stay with you during the first weeks after your mommy makeover, you’re going to want someone there to keep an eye on the kids. Another option, if your children are old enough and can be away from their mom for a week, is to have your children go visit their grandparents or other relatives during the time when you’re recovering.
Along with having someone to take care of the kids while you recuperate, you’ll also want to have someone to complete other household chores. You won’t feel up to washing the dishes or sweeping the floor during those first two weeks, or for even longer. If you’re usually responsible for housework, you may want to work out a system with your spouse or consider hiring a housekeeper during your recovery.
You’re At Your Goal Weight
One big misconception people often have about liposuction and other body contouring surgeries is that the procedures are designed to be weight loss surgeries. That’s just not the case. You might drop a few pounds after a mommy makeover, due to the fat and excess skin that’s removed. But your surgeon will most likely recommend that you wait to schedule your makeover until after you’ve lost the bulk of any weight you gained during pregnancy.
You Can Take Time Off from Your Job
Just as you want to be sure that someone is there to care for your children and home while you recover from a mommy makeover, you also want to be sure that you have enough time off from work to allow for a full recovery. While you might feel OK enough to go back to the office after just a week, it’s usually a good idea to take at least two weeks off, if not three. Doing so will give you ample time to recuperate and rest after your surgeries.
Procedures That Are Often Part of a Mommy Makeover
One of the great things about a mommy makeover is that it’s a fully customizable procedure. Your surgeon can recommend a variety of body contouring procedures to help you reach your goals. Usually, the three procedures that are most commonly part of a mommy makeover include the following:
- Tummy Tuck
- Breast Lift and/or Breast Augmentation
Depending on your goals, the makeover might also include:
- Thigh lift
- Arm lift
- Brazilian butt lift
