The Ultrapulse 5000 CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) Laser has been used at the Aesthetic Surgery Center since August of 1995 and has become an integral part of the contemporary approach to restoring the aging face. Facelifts, forehead lifts and blepharoplasties have little or no effect on fine to medium facial wrinkles. These procedures cannot pull skin tight enough to remove fine to medium facial wrinkles, especially wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. Crepey eyelid skin, vertical lip and frown lines can be smoothed effectively with the use of the Carbon Dioxide laser.
About Ultrapulse 5000 CO2
An Ultrapulse 5000 CO2 Laser WashTM to the entire face produces a tightening effect of the entire facial area that many times mimics the results often seen as a “non-surgical facelift.” Skin damage that has been promoted by smoking, alcohol, and excessive exposure to sunlight responds exceedingly well to laser resurfacing. The carbon dioxide laser is effective in washing away brown facial age spots that have accumulated over time with excessive sun exposure.
Is there a recovery period after laser skin resurfacing?
The procedure requires one to three passes with the laser. The first pass vaporizes the dry, wrinkled and sun damaged skin and literally washes it away. The second and third pass stimulate new collagen formation and basically “shrink wraps” the collagen bonds, tightening the overall facial skin. This new collagen formation enhances the structural integrity of the skin and lifts the face. The skin tightening effect produced by the carbon dioxide laser is immediate and throughout the healing phase demonstrates progressive improvement for approximately 6 months. After the procedure, a specifically designed clear dressing is applied to the skin, which minimizes peeling or crusting of the skin and reduces discomfort to a minimum.

Ultrapulse 5000 CO2® FAQs
A consultation with one of our surgeons, Dr. Agarwal, Dr. Maloney, Dr. Ross, or Dr. Holmes is the first place to start. If you have deep wrinkles, sun damage, loose skin, and the appropriate skin type, you may be an excellent candidate for this treatment.
If the treatment is performed in a localized area, such as around the eyes or mouth, nerve block injections may be sufficient. However, most commonly intravenous sedation with Propofol in a monitored setting is utilized for a fully ablative CO2 laser treatment. All patients are discharged to home on the same day as the procedure.
Post-operative care is of paramount importance with laser resurfacing. Our plastic surgeons, Dr. Agarwal, Dr. Maloney, Dr. Ross, and Dr. Holmes, insist on having you seen in our office at least 3-4 times in the first 2 week period post-operatively, to ensure meticulous care of the laser sites. Initially, a clear occlusive bandage may be used for the first several days. After this, a cleaning regimen is reviewed with you, and you will use Aquaphor ointment on the laser sites to keep them moist during the first 10 to 14 days.
This is highly dependent on the individual’s skin type and the depth of laser resurfacing chosen. Because the fully ablative CO2 laser treatment is the deepest and most effective laser resurfacing procedure available, the laser sites are red and abraded for 10 to 14 days post-operatively. Then the skin heals with new smooth, pink skin. After this time, make-up can be used to easily camouflage the residual pink color. This pink color will generally fade to normal skin color over a 2 to 3 month period, but sometimes takes longer.
