What is Botox®?

Botox vs. Dysport

Although the onset of action for Dysport is faster, what matters most to our patients is how long the results last. We have found that Botox lasts longer for our patients, so it is our product of choice.

Who would be an ideal candidate for BOTOX

Ideal candidates for this procedure are men and women of all ages who want to address dynamic wrinkles such as frown lines or crow’s feet and have realistic expectations. There is no “ideal age” for this procedure. While it effectively treats existing wrinkles, younger patients often use it as a preventative measure to delay the formation of new lines.

When BOTOX® May Not Be Recommended

BOTOX® may not be recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Have an active skin infection at the injection site. Have a known allergy to botulinum toxin products. Have certain neuromuscular conditions.

You should also tell your doctor about any medications, supplements, or recent botulinum toxin injections before treatment.

During your consultation, your surgeon will review your medical history, treatment goals, and any potential risk factors to determine whether BOTOX® is an appropriate option for you.

What to Expect with BOTOX® Injections

Before Your BOTOX® Appointment

Prior to your procedure, inform the doctor if you have received any form of botulinum toxin injections within the last four months. You may also need to discontinue any non-prescription blood thinners a few days before the injections to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding.

Dr. Agarwal and Dr. Holmes, our Naples plastic surgeons, determine exactly where to administer several tiny injections to help achieve the best results. The number of units required to markedly reduce wrinkles depends on the treatment area and the severity of the wrinkles.

Because every face is different, your treatment is planned according to your facial anatomy, muscle movement, and aesthetic goals. The objective is to soften dynamic wrinkles while preserving natural facial expression, so your results look refreshed rather than frozen or overdone.

What to Expect During Treatment

Although no anesthesia is required, topical anesthetic cream and ice are used to minimize any discomfort. The injection sites should be iced after the treatment. The entire procedure takes about ten minutes and is performed as an in-office procedure.

Recovery, Results, and Maintenance

After your procedure, you may resume normal activities immediately. Results may take up to seven days to be visible, with the maximum benefit seen between one and two weeks. BOTOX® results generally last for three to four months, depending on the area treated. You may choose to schedule additional appointments to maintain your results.

Combining BOTOX® with Dermal Fillers

Some patients choose to combine botulinum toxin injections with other injectable treatments, including Juvederm, Voluma, Radiesse, Restylane, and Bellafill. While BOTOX® relaxes the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, it cannot address static wrinkles or lost volume as other injectables can.

Patients who wish to fill in sunken areas of the cheeks or under the eyes, soften deep nasolabial folds, or plump the lips may consider these other options, which may be performed at the same time.

What Can BOTOX Treat

The most common cosmetic use of BOTOX® is temporarily relaxing the facial muscles that cause wrinkles. Botulinum toxin injections are FDA approved to treat glabellar lines, which are the wrinkles located between the brows, and have also been shown to soften and reduce crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, upper lip lines, and lines in the neck.

Common BOTOX® Treatment Areas

The following are common treatment areas, along with the typical number of units required:

• Frown lines that develop between the eyebrows: 10–35 units
• Crow’s feet, which fan out from the outer corners of the eyes: 10–50 units
• Forehead furrows, or the horizontal lines that form when the eyebrows are raised: 10–35 units
• Muscle bands of the neck: 10–50 units
• “Bunny lines,” or horizontal lines at the bridge of the nose: 5–10 units
• Upper lip: 4–8 units
• Chin, to reduce dimpling or pitting of the chin: 5–10 units

Botulinum toxin injections have also been used to treat a wide range of conditions, including lazy eye, which is caused by an imbalance in the muscles the position the eye; hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating; chronic migraines; and contracted muscles.

Frown Lines Between the Brows

Frown lines are caused by the bunching of skin from facial muscle contraction. When we frown, the skin between the eyebrows is gathered into a fold, which can eventually cause a chronic furrow. This may give the face a frustrated, discouraged, or angry look, even when you do not feel that way.

Other Uses of Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin injections have also been used to treat a wide range of medical conditions, including lazy eye, which is caused by an imbalance in the muscles that position the eye; hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating; chronic migraines; and contracted muscles.

How BOTOX Works

Botulinum toxin may be injected in small amounts to prevent signals from nerve cells from reaching the muscles. This leaves the treated muscles without the instruction to contract, helping them temporarily relax and reducing the formation of frown lines and other dynamic wrinkles.

For muscles to contract, nerves release a neurotransmitter at the junction where nerve endings meet muscle cells. Botulinum toxin helps prevent the release of this neurotransmitter, which reduces muscle activity in the treated area.

When injected into targeted facial muscles, BOTOX® Cosmetic softens the appearance of lines and wrinkles. This effectively treats areas affected by repeated expressions, such as frowning, squinting, or raising the eyebrows

BOTOX Side Effects

It is unlikely that any significant side effects would occur, but some people develop slight temporary bruising at the injection site, as with other injectable treatments. Any swelling or redness at the injection site is typically minor and resolves on its own within a few days. Patients may develop a headache or flu-like syndrome.

This procedure is considered very safe, although rare side effects include mild nausea and transient numbness. It is possible to develop a droopy eyelid or dropped eyebrows after Botox is administered.  Very rare risks include difficulty speaking or swallowing if the toxin spreads.
